Week 5 Notes Print

Warm up - Charades

The Class was divided up into four groups of around five per group. Each member was given one of five cards with a familiar Vietnamese word on it, a card they were not to show anyone else. Then the group went around in a circle, one after another, and acted out the word on their card. Without uttering a word - in Vietnamese or English - they acted out their word until others in their team guessed the word. The words used were Đức Giê-hô-va, Chúa Giê-su, Kinh Thánh, Rao Giảng and Kem. The first team to complete all five cards won.

Lesson 1
- Tones and Pronunciation

Difficult Pronunciation and Reading Exercise, pages 23-24. And here is its audio.
Lesson 2 - 100 words

The class learned that Tony Buzan discovered that to be 100% fluent in any language, you need only learn 800 words. To be 50% fluent you need only learn 100 words. And to be 33% fluent, you need only learn 8 words. The class was eventually given the list of the 100 words that will lead to being up to 50% fluent in Vietnamese. However, they were first taught a technique that aids learning and memorizing new vocabulary called Word Association. The students were shown 10 words and a word association anecdote or story. All ten were covered in just two to three minutes, yet it was discovered that the whole class remembered all 10 words almost instantly. What a powerful technique.

Lesson 3 - Theocratic Terms and Word of the Day

The students were given two lists of 7 words each that they could learn using the Word of the Day technique. For your chosen word of the day, try to use it as much as possible for that entire day. Use it in a full Vietnamese sentence if you can, but even if you insert your Vietnamese word-of-the-day into an English sentence, it will still help immensely. So much about language learning is about expanding your vocabulary. This gradual and systematic way of increasing your vocabulary stockpile is an excellent way to do that. Here is a blank Word of the Day form that you can use for yourself. Either write in in pencil every week, or print a new one every week and write up a new list.

Lesson 4 - Tones and Pronunciation

We continued with more sounds: I – Y / GI – GHI / IA / IÊU – IU – YÊU. Pages 25-26. Here is the audio.

Lesson 5 - ULG - Time Language Stucture and Muscle Memory

ULG Time Language Structure and Muscle Memory. Utilizing the body's own capacity for muscle memory, the class, as a group, came up with almost two sentences worth of exaggerated gestures to accompany this new 'time' vocabulary and to increase their retention capacity using this Muscle Memory Technique. The students were given some specific homework for this lesson: come up with as many new personal exaggerated gestures from this ULG and share them with the class next week.

Here is the audio for this ULG

Lesson 6 - Culture

A wonderful and encouraging Interview with Chị Nga, conducted by Anh Phong.

Lesson 7 - Field Service

We are continuing on with the campaign, using our presentation from a couple of weeks ago. As a class, we reviewed some experiences the class has had with the memorial campaign. The amazing coincidences in our experiences confirmed to all of us that the Angels are very interested in the Vietnamese field. The class listened to a couple of past experiences demonstrating that you do not need talent or linguistic prowess to bring people into the truth; people have been brought into the truth with but a few words spoken by language learners in the target mother tongue, in their heart language.
