Week 12 Notes Print
Warm Up

Pronoun Practice. Each of the sisters were given a card with "Nữ" on it with a random age. Then each of the brothers were also give a card, this time with "Nam" with a random age. The students walked around holding up their card and started basic conversations with other students. They had to use the correct pronoun based on their relative ages. The ages ranged from 3 to 104, and you had to mentally stop yourself from using your fellow student's actual age, but instead use their provided age. A lot of fun was had as you can see herehere and here.

Lesson 1 - Tones and Pronunciation

We continued with the second half of our "U" sounds, where we were continually taught that the diphthong's and triphthong's dominated the sound. Sounds we learned in this lesson were UYÊN / UYNH / UÔN - UÔNG / UÔM / UM / UN - UNG. Pages 63-65. Here is this lesson's audio.

Lesson 2 - Intermediate Conversation

The class was given the Intermediate Conversation Handout. They were immediately launched into an English Off Communicative Approach lesson using all the different questions, answers and statements on the hand out with as many students and helpers as possible in the time given. The students were also advised they should include all these new topical sentences to their personal phrase books. Here is this lesson's audio.

Lesson 3 - Treasure Hunt - Directions

The class was broken into pairs. One person received a map with treasure marked on it. The other person received a sheet of directions (so they could understand the instructions they were given). The student with the map had to direct their partner to guide them to the treasure using directions only in Vietnamese. They weren't allowed to return until they had found their treasure. There were two lots of treasure for each team and they had to swap jobs of directing to find all of their stashes of chocolatey loot. Some great photos of the fun can be found herehere, here and here

Tea Break

Lesson 4 - Tones and Pronunciation

We completed our final "U" sounds, ÚC - ÚT / ÚP. Then we did Revision # 7 and then some of the "U" difficult pronunciations. Pages 66-68. Here is this lesson's audio.

Lesson 5 - Musical Dictation

Have you ever noticed that no matter how strong a person’s accent is when they speak English, when they sing you can hardly tell? Singing is an excellent way to perfect an accent. The class received a handout of the first verse of song 12. Michael then read each word slowly and clearly for the class. The class wrote down how the pronunciation sounded to them under each word. After that, it was singing time! The class got up and sang for their rather audience of helpers. They sounded fantastic! The class used the second page of the handout to see how these songs can be adapted to presentations, if only they could be sung at the doors. Here is the 'spoken' audio for this lesson.

Lesson 6 - Juggling Practice

Five minute juggling practice while being quizzed on months of the year.

Lesson 7 - Culture

We re-visited the circle diagram illustrating the view of oneself in relation to the group in either western culture and asian culture, particularly in relation to the family unit.

Lesson 8 - Field Service

The class was again taught how to introduce a scripture, and they were also advised to not only practice reading a scripture thoroughly, but also to choose only the key sentence or phrase from the text so that it is as straightforward as possible for the benefit of the householder. The class was then broken up into groups of 4-5 made up of beginner students, advanced students and helpers.
