Lesson 1
Revision of Ư
Class received a handout of the Vietnamese alphabet. The class will use this to learn the Vietnamese names of letters and diacritics. They learnt A – E. Then learnt how to ask how to spell a word and how to reply to being asked to spell a word. Chử này đánh vần ra/làm sao?
Lesson 2
The class received a new CD. On this CD a brother reads the first 15 stories from My Book of Bible Stories and paragraphs 6-24 of Chapter 1, What does the Bible really teach?. This is to be used for accent reduction. (Worksheet/Explanation) A link to all the audio is here: http://db.tt/OtVTrS
Lesson 3
300/800 words. This was sort of a dictation lesson, to see how the class went remembering some words from last week’s material and clothing lesson. Anthony read out some of the words, and the class wrote out how they thought they were spelled. Anthony then wrote the correct spelling on the board and everyone marked their own, He then read out some new words – all kitchen related. These words were new to most of the students. They then received a sheet with a number of Kitchen related words for them to learn this week.
Lesson 4
Revision of Alphabet learnt so far. Each student chose a word, and Anh Sơn then asked them “Chử này đánh vần ra sao?” and the student would have to answer as if spelling to a Vietnamese person. This is how children learn to spell in Vietnam. The formula is as follows:
Start with the vowel + ending consonant = the sound the vowel/consonant combination makes + beginning consonant + vowel/consonant combination = word + tone = complete word.
I.e. MÁT = A (ar) + T = AT + M AT = MAT sắc MÁT (pronounced 'AR - T - AT - M - AT - MAT SẮC MÁT')
Or LẦN = Â (ér) + N = ÂN + L ÂN = LÂN huyền LẦN (pronounced 'ÉR - ENER - ÂN - L - ÂN - LÂN HUYỀN LẦN')
Remember, these are the 'names' of the letters, it hasn't got a lot to do with pronunciation, just like English the name of the letter B is pronounced BEE but when we read we don't say Beerought we just say brought etc etc. Lots of practice will make this easier with time. Sadly there is no song to learn the alphabet like there is in English, so we’ll just have to do the best we can.
Lesson 5
The students received their marked dictation sheets from last week. The class did really well with this. Michael explained a few things that seemed to be a problem across the class i.e. there was a little trouble hearing the difference between dấu ngã/hỏi và dấu nặng. The class then did the next installment of dictation. This week’s dictation was taken from Chapter 2 of the require brochure, paragraph 6.
Lesson 6
Field service. The class received a sheet for customising return visits. As an example the class pretended they had left the questions ‘Is this situation on earth just a dream?’ ‘Tình trạn trên đất có phải là mơ mộng hão huyền?’ on a previous visit and had returned to answer that question. To answer that question Anthony used 2 Peter 3:13. And raised the question for next visit ‘so what is the new heavens and new earth?’ ‘Vậy thì trời mới, đất mới là gì?’.
Extra’s from this week’s class
We had a Circuit Overseer’s visit this week, he gave an encouraging talk, Also Anh Bình was visiting from Vietnam and gave his experience of learning the Vietnamese language and gave some practical suggestions for learning the language. Some highlights are attached.
