Lesson 1
Revision of homework – sentences the students made up about kitchen things. Then we had a test on the words we learnt last week (Worksheet). Anthony collected the sheets and marked them, handing them back to the class at the beginning of lesson 5. The class then learnt routine words. They were given a sheet to fill out for homework which is a week’s worth of their daily routine. Anthony will collect and mark these next week.
Lesson 2
The class received 2 handouts, one of a summary of the alphabet and how to do spelling, the other was an update of the sounds sheet we received last week. This sheet has an additional (rare) sound UYT – UYCH.
The class learnt more of the alphabet G – P. Since B and P are pronounced the same in the Vietnamese alphabet how do you tell the difference? When speaking we say B = Bò and P = Phở in writing it is called upper b (B trên) and lower P (P dưới)
Lesson 3
Dictation. For the first part of this lesson we reviewed some fairly consistent spelling errors. Then on to this week’s dictation. A little harder this week, we did Lesson 1 Paragraph 1 of the Require Brochure.
Lesson 4
Listening to native Vietnamese speakers. We had Chi Tâm, Chi Hương, Anh Ken, Macayla and Anh Sơn on stage. Michael got them to have basic conversations with one another and after a few sentences he would stop and get the class to say what they thought they were saying. It was really fun, and helpful to do this as a class. Of course can’t normally pause conversations and confer on what might have been said, but it was good practice.
Lesson 5
Revision of the alphabet we know so far, then on to reading practice. The students each had a truth tract and they read as a class one paragraph at a time. At the end of the paragraph, Anh Sơn would pick up on some mispronunciations and explain things the students didn’t understand. Of particular concern was the pronunciation of words that end in ÂU – remember this sound is closer to Ô not AO. Keep practicing this sound. After the class had read the first page, Anh Sơn read it for the class. He asked the class to have a pen ready and mark all the places he paused. He did this so that when the class practices at home they will know where to pause and what words to group together. This will make the students more natural sounding when they read.
Lesson 6
We had a practice session for the ministry, no new information today. The class broke off one or two with each instructor/helper and they worked on perfecting the pronunciation of their presentations.
Homework
As per homework Sheet and also the narrative for this week. Don’t miss out on the crazy happenings of Anh Alastair and friends, the story gets really outrageous this week…
