Week 5 PDF Print E-mail
Comments from the Circuit Overseer
As Br Tony Bataglia was visiting Springvale South Congregation this week, he stopped by to give some encouragement to the students.

Lesson One - Tones and Pronunciation (Page 10)
New Sounds - en / em / ét ẹt / ép ẹp

New Vowel - Ê

Lesson Two - 100 words.

Did you know that to be considered fluent - that is hold and understand a substantial conversation - you only need to know 800 words? To be 50% fluent, you only need to know 100 words, and to be 33% fluent you only need to know 8 words. Of course, these 8 words are small connector words like I, is, are, you, be, of etc, so being 33% 'fluent', that is understanding 33% of the words spoken, won't get you too far in a conversation. However, we are going to start on the 100 words and get you on your way to 50% fluency. This weeks technique is Word Association.

Lesson Three - Finding Scriptures
The class faced a test today - Anthony wrote a scripture on the board and then the class had to find it in their Vietnamese Bibles as quickly as they could. The first student to find it would then read it for the class in Vietnamese. The class then received a handout of Theocratic Terms - with the Vietnamese equivalents missing. For homework, the students will have to fill out the missing Vietnamese words!

New sounds - êu / ên - ênh (pronounced the same)/ êm / ết ệt ếch ệch (pronounced the same) / ếp ệp

Congrats to the class, you've passed Level Two!

Lesson Five - ULG - Time. Muscle memory
Michael explained how our nerves are made of the same stuff, have the same structure as brain tissue. This means that the nerves throughout our body have the capacity for a limited amount of memory. How do we use this to our advantage when learning a language? Adding gestures to words can increase your memory retention by up to 50%! The class put this into practice with the time ULG. i.e. The class picked appropriate gestures for each of the following words Today (gesture) I (gesture) want (gesture) to eat (gesture). Make up a gesture for each of the words in the ULG, then put them together into sentences - You're now more likely to remember them!

Lesson Six - Field Service
The class received a new presentation. After learning the new presentation, the students had some time to practice amongst themselves. Please Note: if you don't feel comfortable with doing the whole presentation straight away, simply add asking the householder for their name, and this can be your progress for this week.

Homework
As per homework sheet. Also, don't forget to fill in the sheet of theocratic terms you received in Anh Anthony's part. Next weeks warm up activity will be on exaggerated gestures. Prepare some gestures and we will have some demonstrations next week.
