Week 7

Warm up activity

Michael took some items from the students - shoes, a ring, a watch, a tie and a jacket. He wrote the Vietnamese names of these articles on the board and the students had to ask for their items back in Vietnamese. If they asked for the wrong article they would receive that one and the owner would then have to ask for the item back from them. Fortunately, everyone got their stuff back in the end!

Lesson One - Tones and Pronunciation - Page 13

Review of all the sounds learnt last week.

New Vowel - O

New Sound OA

The class practiced the difference between OA and AO. With the word NGOA it is pronounced with a w sound in the middle, NGWOA.

New Sound OE

The class practiced the difference between OE and EO. With the word NGOE it is also pronounced with a w sound in middle - NGWOE.

Anh Son tested the class on their knowledge of the names of the tones.

Lesson Two - Personal Phrasebooks

Revision of ULG - Family homework from last week.

Phrasebooks bought from the shop are often pretty useless. They have phrases like ‘I have made my reservation’ and ‘see the magic monkey in the tree’. They have little or no benefit for our ministry, so we need a phrase book we can actually use in our ministry.

In pairs the class come up with phrases they would like to be able to say in Vietnamese.

I would like to ask you something

Tôi muốn hỏi anh/chị một điều....

Is your family in the truth?

Gia đình của Anh/Chi có trong lẽ thật không?

What part of Vietnam are you from?

Anh từ phần Vietnam nào? A more commonly asked question though, is where is your home town? Quê Anh/Chị ở đâu?

Do you have a belief in a creator?

Anh/Chi có một tin tưởng nơi Đấng Tạo Hóa không?

How is your family?

Gia Đình anh/chị khỏe không?

The class then had to translate their question into Vietnamese.

The class received 3 handouts. For homework you need to add another five phrases to your phrasebook. It is suggested that each student get a notebook and dedicate it to becoming their personal phrasebook.

Lesson Three - 100 words

The class was tested on a few of the 25 words they have learnt over the past two weeks using word association.

New educational exercise for remembering the 100 words – Juggling. Traditional teaching methods generally use 2 senses - sight and sound. Using the senses stimulates the brain, the more the brain is stimulated the more you will remember, hence we need to use more of our senses for learning then just sight and sound. Juggling will introduce another sense to the learning process and will help us remember the things we are learning. Everyone received a set of three scarves. They then had a demonstration of juggling to the audio CD (they each received a copy of the CD at the end of the class). Then they had juggling lessons. Practice juggling with English words at first then either introduce Vietnamese words or turn on the CD. The idea is that you will focus on the juggling and the Vietnamese words will become the secondary focus. This sounds a little counterproductive, but really, we don’t focus on the words we know in English, they are simply there to be used, stored in our brains. We want to achieve the same with Vietnamese, that we don’t have to think too much about the words, they will just naturally be there. Juggling can help us do that (not to mention give us a pretty good workout at the same time).

The class learnt the names of the vowels A à   /  E Ê  / I-Y and O and practiced the names the tones.

New Sound OI

New Sound OAN / OANG (pronounced the same)

New Sound OANH

Lesson Five - How to ask the question How?

The class went through their homework from last week and had an opportunity to raise questions about the question How? This is a difficult subject, please continue to ask the instructors over the coming weeks and months (and years) if you are unsure about how to ask How.

Lesson Six - Culture Lesson

This weeks culture lesson was a particularly practical one on one important way Asian culture differs from Western culture and how that has influenced the using of numerous titles when referring to others and to self. Read the notes here.

Lesson Seven - Field Service

The class received a new extended presentation and learnt how to introduce a scripture. They used Ps 37:29 which they learnt last week.

Giani and Anne demonstrated the presentation for the class. The class then had a few minutes to practice amongst themselves the new presentation.

Homework

As per homework sheet.
