Warm Up Exercise

Michael wrote three english sentences on the board.

The cat sat on the dog.

Is this your child?

Please give me back my egg.

We naturally put tones on these sentences in English. Sometimes this natural intonation affects the way we speak tones in Vietnamese, so Michael wrote vietnamese tones on these English sentences, and the class had to say the sentences following the Vietnamese tones. This is harder than we may think as it is hard to go against our English inclination! This exercise helped us to see the need for concentration when reading Vietnamese tones.

Lesson One - Picture flash cards

We have finished the 100 words, now we are moving on to the 300 spiritual words and 800 common words.The class learnt a new method of learning these words - Picture Flash Cards. The amazing benefit of ths method is that you don't need to use the English equivilents. Just see the picture and associate it with the Vietnamese word. The class used 21 spiritual terms or attitude and conduct. For homework, make your own picture flash cards for these terms.

Lesson Two - Tones and Pronunciation - page 15

Revision of sounds from last week.

Dont forget with Ngoe and Ngoa it is pronounced with a W squeezed in the middle - ngwoe and ngwoa. This is different to Ngheo and ngao.

New Sound: OÁT OẠT / OÁC OẠC (pronounced the same)

Lesson Three - Composite Words

Although Vietnamese is a mono-syllabic language, words are often joined together to expand on meaning. For this lesson we focused on the Fruitage of the Spirit. All aspects of the fruitage of the spirit are made up of two words each, to accurately convey the full meaning. The fruitage of the spirit well illustrates how composite words work in Vietnamese.

Lesson Five - Vietnamese Language Structure

For the next few weeks we will have a Language Structure lesson. This week we learnt the use of SỰ. We also learnt the imperatives – ĐI and HÃY and the negative imperatives – CHỚ and ĐỪNG. These words for the moment are mostly for your reference, so you will understand them when you hear them.

Lesson Six - Culture Lesson

This week's culture lesson focused on how Asian culture differs from Western culture in ones view of ones self in relation to the group and how this affects our ministry.. Read the notes here.

Lesson Seven - Field Service

The class had a practice session for the presentation from last week.

The class also learnt two new sentences which will be focused on more next week.

Anh/Chị nói tiếng anh được không? (Do you speak English?)

The class is doing exceptionally well in their pronunciation!
