Lesson Five - Translation

Translation inadvertently teaches grammar. The class translated the first paragraph of the first story in the Bible Stories book. Translating word for word then reading it back in English teaches us how Vietnamese sentences are structured. We could learn sentence structure directly, but learning this way helps us to know instinctively the way a sentence will be structured. For example: How do we know how the following sentence is structured incorrectly? And God did create Earth for us to reside. Shouldn't it be And God made the earth for us to live on? Yet in Vietnamese..Và Đức Chúa Trời đã tạo ra trái đất cho chúng ta ở, the sentence structure is correct. The class will translate the first story this week and the second story next week, then over time translate the rest of the bible stories book. This will give them a very solid understanding of Vietnamese sentence structure! The class were given a photocopy of story 1 and a chart with all the words from the story on it (saves lots of time searching through dictionarys..)
