Warm Up
Vietnamese Whispers. The class stood in three straight lines. The leader of each line was given one of three Vietnamese sentences:
Ba có ba lá cây
Sách này hay sách khác
Cô Mai có hai tai
The leader of each line was to then whisper their sentence to the next person standing in the line, and so on and so forth. The first line to have the team member standing in the last position recite the Vietnamese sentence accurately wins!
Lesson 1 - Tones and Pronunciation
We continued with our O sounds. OACH / OET / ON / OAI / OM / OP.
Lesson 2 - 800 Words
Flash Cards! Except for a brief summary at the end, this entire lesson was delivered in Vietnamese. The class easily followed the basic Vietnamese instructions, stand up, sit down, please be quiet, sisters stand up only, etc. The class was shown 10 Flash Cards of simple images and actions. Without mentioning the English equivalent at all, the class was given the Vietnamese word for the image each time. We kept going back to the same images over and over, and equating the new words to the recognizable images. This mimics how an infant learns language. By equating the new world they are discovering with their eyes with these new words and basic commands they are hearing from their parents, the infant absorbs the language. The class was amazed at how quickly they learned these 10 Words using this flash card and total Vietnamese method and how they were able to follow everything despite no English being used.
Lesson 3 - Composite Words
Tea Break
Lesson 4 - Tones and Pronunciation
We completed our O sounds. OT / OC / ONG - ÔNG / OAY / OEN / OĂM / OĂN - OĂNG / OĂC - OĂT.
Lesson 5 - Language Structure 1
This is the first of the Language Structure Lessons we will have over the next few weeks. This lesson explains the affect "Sự" has on Adjectives and Verbs. Then we discussed Affirmative Infinitives and Negative Infinitives.
Lesson 6 - Culture
Lesson 7 - Field Service
Class was split into 5 groups and each group was helped by a Native Vietnamese helper to listen to the current magazine presentation to help the students fine tune their pronunciation and delivery.
