Warm Up

Today's warm up involved testing students one by one on their actions and movement verbs with a Total Physical Response. There were 18 different actions. Basically this was just another way of checking that everyone did their homework.

Lesson 1 - Alphabet and Spelling

Now that the class learned the Vietnamese alphabet and how to say each letter, today we learned something surprisingly complicated: learning to spell in Vietnamese. Class was shown how this is done. The advantage of learning this? First of all you no longer need to spell Vietnamese in English. I mean that should have been obvious. We don't spell Cambodian in English or Thai in English, why Vietnamese? Secondly, not only will you recognise what's happening when a native person spells something to you, but you can spell things to them! Either words you would like to confirm, or words you are saying but they're just not understanding. Ultimately, a very important aspect of learning Vietnamese. Here is this worksheet's audio.

Lesson 2 - Humour

How successful has learning Vietnamese been when we included a game or an activity? Haven't we learned so much more, remembered so much better? "Humour" is yet another method approved by the Governing Body for language learning and for good reason; it works. In class we played interpreter scenarios. We had either a doctors appointment, or a lawyer's consultation with one student playing the Dr/Lawyer, one playing the patient/client, and the third playing the interpreter. Each with a list of common terms for that scenario, we had some hilarious skits performed by our students - Skin amputations being prescribed and judges being bribed makes for some interesting language learning! Here is the audio of the common terms. And here are some photos of the riotous performances.

Lesson 3 - 800 Words

Today we learned Vietnamese Prepositions. After being given a handout detailing the majority of prepositions you would come across, we broke up into pairs and each pair was given a box and a mouse (thankfully not real) where one student would either place or direct the mouse to do something in relation to the box, and the other student would describe what happened using Vietnamese prepositions. Then they would swap! After several rounds we were given a handout for homeworkwith many different scenarios where we had to describe the scene, again using Vietnamese prepositions. Here is the audio. And here are some photos of us playing with our mice.

Lesson 4 - More Spelling Practice

We put the spelling technique learned in Lesson 1 into practice, spelling a selection of Vietnamese words from page 4 of Lesson 1's handout. As expected, the class picked this technique up extremely fast, well and truly mastering Vietnamese spelling by the end of the lesson.

Lesson 5 - Dictation

Again we handed the marked Week 15 Dictation sheets back to the students. Yet again improvement was readily discernible! We went over a few common errors, things to look out for. Then we started yet another round of Dictation. Michael read from Page 22 of the Listen to God and Live Forever brochure. However, afterwards, we collected the sheets, not for marking, but for scanning. The instructors scanned everyone's worksheets, only so they can be immediately returned to the students so that for the first time, the students will mark their own handiwork. Of course the instructors will be marking them also, using the scans they made, so they can continue to monitor the students' progress.

Lesson 6 - Culture Lesson

This week's culture lesson was an interview with Anh Trung Du and Chị Khả Trinh. Anh Phong conducted the interview. Click on the link to find out more about Anh Du and his experiences growing up in Australia and being in a culturally, linguistically and religiously divided household, as well as Chị Khả Trinh's experience as a successful Vietnamese language learner.

Lesson 7 - Field Service

Time to start bible studies. This week's presentation was a direct approach introducing the Bible Study method, using the Good News from God brochure. This can be used either on interested ones or even the first call work. This simple presentation has brought many into the truth. Get to know it well and when ready, add some more details and make it your own. Here is this presentation's audio.

Homework

As per homework sheet. Also, here are your word of the day words. And here is its audio
