Warm Up

Today the name of the game is Pictionary!! The class divided into three groups and each group would send one representative at a time to the front, where Michael had a list of words that he would reveal to the chosen representative one at a time. That representative needed to rush back to the group and by only drawing help their group guess the Vietnamese word. Normal Pictionary rules apply. No speaking or gesturing, no written words. Only pictures. Once the group guessed the drawing, they would send the next representative who would confirm to word to Michael. The confirmation of the word would reveal the next word on the list. First team to the end of the list wins!

Lesson 1 - Sounding more like a native

This first lesson was based on this handout that gave the students suggestions on how to sound more like a native. Of course, this lesson isn't at all exhaustive. However, it was to teach the students some of the basic concepts, as well as introduce them to the fact that learning a language isn't all vocab and grammar; much of it is imitation of how the language is spoken everyday.

Lesson 2 - Reading Practice Group Sessions

The class broke up into five groups and we had various types of reading practice. Some practiced reading the Bé Học Kinh Thánh brochure, others practiced some Vietnamese Tongue Twisters, like this N Story, C Story and T Story. Here is the audio to the N and C story, and the T Story.

Lesson 3 - A Reference to your References

The students were given a Pamphlet, similar to the one from last week, outlining the wonderful resources we have available to us to aid us in learning Vietnamese. This handout demonstrates very briefly how it is potentially impossible to run out of things to teach yourself when learning Vietnamese, and the staggering variety of references and resources we have available right now and there are more coming soon.

Lesson 4 - Reading Practice Group Sessions

More group sessions, we split up into roughly the same groups again and we did some more Bé Học Kinh Thánh. We also had one group read one of the website's comics, where the aim was to read it with expression; expression that does not affect the tones. Still others practiced some basic interpreting and tested their results with how the brothers chose to translate certain phrases. These are all very effective exercises.

Lesson 5 - Final Assignment Class Time

The class split up into the 5 Final Assignment teams and had class time working on their final assignments. Judging by the energy of the rehearsals as well as the determination of all involved, this promises to be a spectacular show.

Lesson 6 - Culture Lesson

This week we played a recorded interview we had with Sister Thu Ha Tran from Greenfield Park Congregation Sydney. She has much experience in conducting bible studies as well as tutoring language learners. It was very encouraging and practical. Here is the transcript of that interview.

Lesson 7 - Field Service

The students were given one final Field Service handout taken directly from a 2009 Watchtower article about the Chinese Lunar Festival (Tết in Vietnamese), what it involves, its cultural and spiritistic origins, and what help one can have to break the hold of this festival's family and cultural pressure - which of course applies to all worldly festivals and superstitions.
